The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills District has informed that, in pursuance of the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026, which came into force on 1st October, 2026, issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), any birth or death reported more than two years after its occurrence requires an order exclusively from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class instead of an Executive Magistrate and therefore all pending or fresh applications beyond 2 years must be filed/presented directly before the competent Judicial Magistrate First Class under the amended Section 13 of the Act
